Q&A With Kyra

How did you hear about Mercy?

"I was recruited to play field hockey at Mercy and once I learned about the Nursing Program, I decided Mercy was for me."

What inspired you to pursue nursing?

"Having a family member in the hospital and seeing how the nurses helped us through the grieving process showed me how impactful nursing can be. When I was struggling with my own health issues,  having nurses who believed in me and the pain that I was in, made me feel not alone."

Who are your role models or mentors?

"My mother has been a role model for me, helping me pursue my dreams and showing me what a good nurse can be. My biggest mentor at Mercy has been Professor Chaney-Grant. Since starting in fundies (Fundamentals course), she has educated and inspired me while continuously pushing me to be better."

What are your plans after graduation?

"I plan on returning to school in California to become a nurse practitioner. I aspire to earn a doctorate in nursing practice. After earning my degree, I hope to work in rheumatology to be able to help other young adults who are struggling with auto-immune diseases."

Why did you run for president of the Student Nursing Association (SNA)?

"I wanted to become the SNA president to be able to help support my fellow peers and set up a community where we can all help each other through Nursing School. Our Program can be difficult, but having resources such as study groups, testing tactics, and a forum where we can tell our faculty and the dean where we are struggling and being able to improve; that can make all the difference. I wanted to be an advocate for our cohort and create forums for all the cohorts to follow, to show we are not in this alone."
